When a spouse dies, there are many things to deal with, from emotional trauma, funeral arrangements, organizing paperwork, and dealing with financial concerns. All of these things may take days, weeks, or even months to resolve. It is hard to handle everything when you are grieving and going through so much mental turmoil; but, when two people are not married, the scenario changes severely. Dealing with the loss becomes even more difficult and challenging in ways that may not be visible.
